🏡 Local Spotlight: Walton Hall & Gardens

A free-to-roam parkland with something for everyone. Stroll formal beds and tree-lined lawns, let the kids loose at the big play area, then pop into the free Children’s Zoo to meet alpacas, donkeys, goats and the resident (very vocal) peacocks.

On fair-weather days, level paths make it an easy win for buggies, scooters and unhurried laps with a coffee.

Make a day of it with add-ons: Adventure Golf or a classic Pitch ’n’ Putt round; brave the Jungle Parc high-ropes (ages 4+); and refuel in the Heritage Cafe tucked inside the old stables courtyard. The site also runs a rolling calendar of markets, outdoor shows and one-off concerts - worth a peek before you go.

Practical bits:

  • Where: Walton Lea Rd, WA4 6SN. Pay-and-display parking on site.

  • Good to know: Gardens are open daily; Children’s Zoo is free; paid activities include Adventure Golf (adult £7 / junior £6 typical) and Jungle Parc high ropes (sessions bookable online). Opening times vary by season & weather, check before travelling.

  • Food & drink: Heritage Cafe in The Stables; plenty of picnic spots across the lawns.

  • Handy links: 🔗 Plan your visitChildren’s ZooOutdoor activities

❤️ Why We Love It: It’s a genuine budget day out, the gardens and zoo are free, just pay for parking and any extras - and it scales beautifully from a quick hour to a full family outing.

💎 Hidden Gem: Wheelock Rail Trail (Sandbach)

“A lovely little walk with a number of access points, most of them wheelchair/pushchair friendly. Good links to other tracks across fields and by the stream.”

★★★★★ (Google Review)

A gentle green corridor where trains once ran. The Wheelock Rail Trail follows a disused line from Ettiley Heath towards Malkins Bank: level, wide and teeming with wildflowers and birds.

It’s perfect for an easy hour with the kids, a pram-friendly stroll, or a low-effort midweek reset. Surfaces are firm and even, there are no steps or stiles, and access is from several points around Elworth and Wheelock.

Keep it simple with the classic out-and-back stroll, or turn it into a fuller wander by looping onto the Trent & Mersey Canal for a breezy waterside circuit. Expect easy gradients, tree-tunnel sections and the odd kingfisher if you’re lucky.

A bit of history

After the railway closed in 1966, the trackbed grew over until the council and the Wheelock Rail Trail Association restored it as a multi-user path.

Today it forms part of National Cycle Network Route 5, linking Middlewich with Alsager, a community win that keeps the old line alive.

Trail at a glance

  • Length: 2.5km each way (simple there-and-back; turn whenever you like).

  • Surface: flat, well-surfaced, suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs, scooters and bikes.

  • Traffic-free and dog-friendly (great for kids learning to ride).

Plan your visit (quick bits):

  • Start/parking: Easiest access near Lodge Road, Elworth (satnav CW11 3HD). There’s no official car park; on-street parking is used.

  • Trail facts: Well-surfaced, up to 3 m wide; part of the National Cycle Network. Watch for the A534 crossing near the south-eastern end. Dogs welcome; carry bags/water.

  • Facilities: None on the route. Bring snacks and make a cafe stop in Sandbach after.

❤️ Why we love it: A big dose of calm with flat paths, birdsong, and a canal add-on when you’ve got more in the tank.

That’s it for this week.
