🧱 Local Spotlight: National Waterways Museum (Ellesmere Port)
Seven acres of locks, docks and stories. Set where the Shropshire Union Canal meets the Manchester Ship Canal, the National Waterways Museum is a living docklands complex with 19 Grade II-listed buildings, working spaces and a nationally designated boat collection.
It’s the kind of place you meander: peek into the Island Warehouse galleries, wander the yard, then watch working craft move through the basins.
“Really delightful museum, very free to explore at leisure…cottages beautifully restored.”
Don’t miss Porters Row - four original dockworkers’ cottages dressed as homes from 1830, 1900, 1936 and 1952. A walk-through time capsule that makes social history feel close-up and human.
In summer, hop aboard a short canal boat trip (typically Tue/Thu/Sun at 11:00, 12:00, 13:30, 14:30, pay-on-the-day) for quayside views from the water. Refuel at the Waterside Cafe with terrace seating right by the basin.
Practical bits:
Open: Tue-Sun, 10-4pm (also open Bank Holidays). Most visits take 2-3 hours.
Good to know: Friendly dogs on leads are welcome across the site (great for a gentle waterside potter).
Tickets: Day ticket from £13.25 adult / £9.95 child / £32.50 family (save 10% online). Or choose an Annual Pass (unlimited visits for 12 months). Some special events/boat trips extra. 🔗 National Waterways Museum
❤️ Why We Love It: Proper heritage you can stroll through - cobbles, cottages and canal craft, with enough hands-on moments (and a cafe stop) to keep every age happy.
⚡️ Quick Bites: (blink and you’ll miss ‘em!)
🏰 Heritage Open Days kick off - Free tours and special access across Cheshire, 12-21 Sep. 👉 Details
🧵 Paradise Mill FREE day - Booked slots Sat 13 Sep; explore the historic weaving floor. 👉 Details
🍽️ Chester on a Plate Food Tours - Evening tours launched this summer + new “High Tea on the Dee” river cruise collab - very bookable, very fun. 👉 Details

Part rural coffee house, part artisan bakery, Bradwall Bakehouse turns out small-batch sourdough, focaccia and weekend pastries from a converted village hall just 1.5 miles from Sandbach (and 2 miles from J17, M6). There’s plenty of seating, parking on site and proper barista coffee to go with the crumb.
Founded in April 2022, the team bakes without preservatives or additives and supplies farm shops and cafes across Cheshire. In May 2025 they expanded into “The Breadhouse” - a bright cafe space attached to the bakehouse, so you can sit in for toasties, soups and cake, or click-and-collect your weekend loaf. (Tip: go early for the widest choice.)
They’re also quietly racking up local love - Taste Cheshire Awards 2023, Food Producer of the Year finalist.

Practical bits:
Open: Tue-Fri 10:00-15:00, Sat 09:00-16:00, closed Sun/Mon.
Address: Bradwall Village Hall, Bradwall Rd, Bradwall, Sandbach, CW11 1RG.
❤️ Why We Love It: Impeccable bread in a laid-back rural spot - easy parking and loaves you’ll plan your week around.
That’s it for this week.
