🔬 Local Spotlight: Catalyst Science Discovery Centre & Museum (Widnes)
Tucked beside Spike Island on the Mersey, Catalyst is a hands-on science hub with a Cheshire backstory - part interactive museum, part industrial archive, and brilliant for curious kids and grown-ups. Expect proper “press the buttons and make it go” exhibits rather than glass-box displays.
“A glass walled, roof-top gallery… with stunning panoramic views and hands-on exhibits.”
Three interactive galleries (100+ exhibits) cover chemistry, engineering and real-world innovation, with live science demos and family workshops during school holidays. If you’ve done the big national museums, this feels friendlier, cheaper, and far less crowded; you’ll actually get time on the kit.
Ride the external glass lift to the Observatory Gallery for widescreen views over Spike Island and the Mersey Gateway Bridge, then refuel in the cafe while the kids hit the outdoor play area. Parking’s free, and the whole site works well as a half-day paired with a riverside walk.
Practical bits: Open Tue–Sun • Free parking • Family tickets & annual pass available.
❤️ Why We Love It: A proper under-the-radar STEM day out: tonnes to tinker with, big Mersey views, easy parking, and no elbow-to-elbow queues.
Once a busy quay and now a wide, breezy parade beside vast saltmarsh, Parkgate is Cheshire’s easiest wild-watching stroll: flat paths, benches galore and huge skies over the Dee. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Tip: Time it for a high tide and the marsh comes alive at your feet as ducks, geese, waders and sometimes raptors, push in close to the sea wall. Best viewing is by the Old Baths car park; arrive early for space and spectacle.
Off-tide, make it a gentle promenade loop and finish with a treat: Nicholls Famous Ice Cream has been scooping house-made flavours here for decades, and there are cafes, pubs and proper fish-and-chips along The Parade.
Practical bits: it’s stroller-friendly and good for all ages; wrap up on breezy days. For birding wow-factor, check the high-tide timetable or RSPB’s Parkgate events before you go.
❤️ Why We Love It: A family-friendly, big-reward wander with easy paths, epic estuary views and an ice-cream finish.
