💎 Hidden Gem: Dane Valley Way (Congleton Riverside Walk)

If you want a walk that feels properly “out there” without heading deep into the Peaks, this stretch of the Dane Valley Way is a great shout. Starting around Congleton, it follows the River Dane through a mix of quiet countryside, open meadows and peaceful riverside paths.

It’s one of those routes that just ticks along nicely - no big climbs, no tricky navigation, just a steady, scenic walk with enough variety to keep it interesting. In early April, it really comes into its own too, with everything starting to green up and the river sections looking their best.

The best bit is how flexible it is. You can keep it shorter with a simple out-and-back, or turn it into a proper circular by looping out towards Astbury and back through fields and lanes.

Route details

  • Distance: ~4-6 miles (depending on route)

  • Time: 2-3 hours

  • Start point: Congleton town centre or Riverside (various access points)

  • Terrain: Riverside paths, fields and quiet lanes

  • Difficulty: Easy-moderate

Practical bits

  • Can be muddy in sections after rain - decent footwear recommended

  • Easy to shorten or extend depending on time/energy

  • Dog-friendly, but some livestock fields on extended loops

Post-walk stop

  • Congleton town centre - plenty of solid café and pub options

  • Astbury village - quieter stop with a proper village feel

That’s it for this week.
