πŸ’Ž Hidden Gem: Danebridge, the Hanging Stone & Wincle Brewery

If you want a walk that feels like it shouldn't exist in Cheshire, this is the one. Danebridge sits in the deep wooded valley of the River Dane, right on the Cheshire and Staffordshire border. Most visitors to the Peak District sweep straight past it. Their loss, your gain.

The route follows the river from Danebridge into Forest Wood, climbing gently through ancient oak woodland before opening out onto the moorland edge. Less than a mile in, you reach the Hanging Stone - a dramatic gritstone outcrop that juts out over the valley with sweeping views across the Cheshire Plain on one side and the dark moors rising towards the Roaches on the other. It stops people in their tracks every time.

From here, the path loops back through wildflower meadows and rough pasture, crossing picturesque stone bridges over the Dane before returning to the valley. The whole circuit is around 4 miles and takes roughly 2 hours at a relaxed pace.

The stop at the end is the Ship Inn in Wincle - a 16th-century stone pub sitting just above the river, with three low-beamed rooms, a red sandstone fireplace, flagged floors and the kind of atmosphere that genuinely hasn't been manufactured.

Wincle Brewery is just down the hill and their ales are available in bottled form at the bar alongside JW Lees cask ales. Hearty food, large portions, dog-friendly throughout. It's the kind of pub that justifies the drive.

Practical bits:

  • Start: Roadside parking on The Falls Road, Danebridge, SK11 0QE

  • Distance: 4 miles circular

  • Time: 2 hours at a comfortable pace

  • Terrain: Woodland paths and moorland tracks - rocky and muddy in places. Boots essential.

  • Dogs: Welcome on the walk and at the Ship Inn

  • Getting there: About 6 miles south of Macclesfield via the A523 and Wincle Road. No practical public transport - this one needs a car.

  • The stop: The Ship Inn, Wincle SK11 0QE
